Brilliant English‏

Someone sent this to me and I thought it was awesome and wanted to share it.

This write-up is absolutely BRILLIANT!
For those who speak English well, you will find it amusing.

Can you read these right the first time?
1) The bandage was wound around the wound.
2) The farm was used to produce produce .
3) The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse .
4) We must polish the Polish furniture.
5) He could lead if he would get the lead out.
6) The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.
7) Since there is no time like the present , he thought it
Was time to present .
8) A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
10) I did not object to the object.
11) The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row .
13) They were too close to the door to close it.
14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.
15) A seamstress and a sewer fell down into a sewer line.
16) To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
17) The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
18) Upon seeing the tear in the painting I shed a tear.
19) I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese?
One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick'

Christmas is coming

Wow another Christmas is coming in two days... The kids can't wait. December has been a busy month for them. It started on 7th December with a Christmas party at Church. They played games and watch an entertainer and had their face painted, not Andrew though, I am not too sure but I think he didn't want to wait in line. They saw the "pretend" Santa.
Andrew asked for a remote control car.
Matthew has reindeer painted across his face. He asked Santa for Lego.Natalie has a bear angel painted on her face and she asked Santa for a pink and a purple rubber ducky. How easy is that to find?

The following Sunday, we had the Edginton Christmas as Kyle's parents and Brother Tim and his family were going to Mexico for Christmas. They have already opened presents but they are still talking about Santa.

The "Edginton" grandkids having dinner.

Then there was the Christmas Concert on the 15th. The theme was Polar Express and the kids wore PJs. Andrew and Matthew was in the same concert and Andrew played the drums. Matthew was the English narrator for the whole half hour performance and did an awesome job. In between he also played the xylophone.

Here is a YouTube video of them practicing at home.

The Sunday that just passed, they spent the after with their cousin Erin and built a ginger bread train and went to McDonalds. That is a treat for them as their mum and dad do not take them there. That is only reserved for the grandparents and aunties and uncles. While they were gone we had a great visit with Pammy from Toronto. Wow no kids for the afternoon. After that we went to Aunty KitPings for dinner. It was the first day of Winter and any excuse for a dinner party. The kids had fun playing with her grand daughter, Emma, who is almot 10 months old. So much fun.

Party after party after party. Actually with all the partying, the kids are so tired at the end of the day, sometimes it is great. They were in bed by 7pm last night and Kyle and I were able to sneek out for a movie. What a treat for us!!

We have finished shopping and wrapped up all the presents. They kids watched a movie while Kyle and I sneaked off to wrap them. Couldn't risk them coming in while we were sneaking around!!

I am happy to add that I am singing with the midnight choir for Christmas this year again. I just love it. My brother Joel is leaving for Halifax on Christmas morning so we will have Christmas dinner on Christmas eve with his daughter Erin and then the whole family will go for the Childrens mass at 6:30pm. On Christmas day, since Kyle's parents won't be here, his sister Holly and her family will join us for a Chinese Christmas dinner. Can't have too much Turkey!!

I am looking forward to all that food...

My dad is better now and he is up to walking at the malls again. So I have decided to walk with them twice a week. I am starting my exercise routine before New Year!! I have to start getting ready for swimsuit weather. Talk about thinking positive. Not going to talk about the weather in Winnipeg...

Have a awesome Christmas everyone.

Blood Donation

Just donated blood yesterday after about 10 years. I tried to donate last year but I couldn't because I was just in Costa Rica and have to wait for a year after returning before being able to donate. Malaria scare! The other years I was too busy having babies...

Usually when I go to donate blood, I can only give blood half of the time. I am on the border line of being low in iron. So when I went there, they prick your finger for a drop of blood, they put it in some liquid, can't remember what it is. If it sinks, you have enough iron in your blood. So mine was sinking and half way down, some floats to the surface. Ok, I thought, what is going on. So they do another proper test and everything is ok, the iron levels are sufficient!! Sometimes it is frustrating when you go and want to give and then can't donate.

So I give my blood. I always stress when they put the "big" needle in, took about 6 minutes for the pint of blood, I heard someone else it took a couple of minutes... I had an audience of 3 little Edgintons watching patiently. After donation they give you juice and cookies but the 3 of them all got cookies and juice before hand as they got stickers that said "Future Donors". Not a bad thing.

The whole thing took about an hour, they recommend having lots of water the day of donation and eat iron rich foods before hand so you don't have the iron problem I have.

I write this to share my experience. I know lots of you can and do donate blood and others do not. It is a little gift that you can share with other. One of those gifts that nature gave to us. Why not share it with others. Only an hour of your time. In some instances the blood donation center comes to your place of work and you don't even have to drive!! Think about it, some day you might need the blood. My dad's surgery had the potential of being postponed as they did not have enough blood for surgery. I encourage you to share your gift with others.
